I’m Takudzwa. I’m in my second year of Actuarial Science at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and I also run SMIYL (an A Level EdTech platform) full time. Our mission is to help A level students get on top of their studies, and get their dream grades, so their can get into their dream universities. We specialize in creating tailored learning environments that cater to the unique needs of each student, fostering both academic excellence and a love for learning. Position Title: CAIE A Level Tutor
🏝️Seeking a fully remote CAIE A Level Tutor
We’re thrilled that this job callout caught your attention!
We’re looking for a patient, enthusiastic, and independent team member to join our small team as a CAIE A Level Tutor. This is a role for you to show off the skills you acquired in A Levels, pass those on to students, help students think critically, and show them how to solve problems from first principles. You’ll also serve as a role model for students, since you are studying the same subjects they aspire to and attending the universities they hope to go to one day. You’ll be working closely with me (Takudzwa) to bring SMIYL’s vision to life. There is also opportunity outside of tutoring to join our resource and social content creation on our Website, Youtube and Instagram.
Expect to be tutoring 1-5 hours of tutoring each week initially, with the opportunity to grow as your schedule permits. Do note that it may take us up to a month to assign you your first student, due to changes in tutoring demand. You should have reliable access to WiFi, your own computer, a drawing tablet (or ipad + sylus), and a smartphone with a data plan.

- Contractor hourly rate between between $10-20 USD, depending on your experience

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Tutoring Dedication
- Conduct engaging weekly tutoring lessons in your subject of choice for AS and A Level students by building personal connection with students
- Develop personalized learning plans tailored to each student’s unique needs and goals
- Use engaging teaching methods such as real-life trends and pop culture examples to build genuine connection and rapport with students
- Progress Tracking
- Monitor and report on students’ progress, adjusting teaching strategies as needed
- Maintain detailed records of sessions, progress reports, and other required documentation
- Prepare and present regular progress updates to stakeholders
- Syllabus Confidence
- Stay up to date with CAIE syllabus trends and changes in your specific subject
- Use SMIYL resources alongside your own for a personalized lesson plan
- Student Support and Engagement
- Offer kind and clear feedback to progress students’ learning and development
- Manage daily enquiries from students, including scheduling sessions and responding to questions
- Availability and Commitment
- Be available for tutoring sessions during agreed-upon hours, particularly after-school hours and weekends
- Commit to tutoring for roughly 3 to 6 months

Kindness and patience – you understand that not all students are the same. You get that different students will require different styles of teaching and that they learn at different paces. You’re ready for this challenge, keen to experiment with what works and patient with students.
You love getting to know people – you’re genuinely interested in your students as individuals. You enjoy learning about their backgrounds, interests, and aspirations. This curiosity helps you build rapport, tailor your teaching approach, and create a more engaging and personalized learning experience. You understand that strong tutor-student relationships are fundamental to effective education and you’re committed to fostering a supportive environment where every student feels valued and understood.
Ability to work on your own – you have next level organizational skills and have no issue getting the work done independently while maintaining high standards
Strong interpersonal skills – you feel comfortable having honest (and sometimes hard) conversations, ensuring transparent communication with SMIYL and students
Non-negotiables:
- Must have completed CAIE A levels with at least an A in the subject you wish to tutor
- The ability to get things done efficiently without supervision as an independent tutor
- Passion for connecting with people and building meaningful relationships
- Empathetic & compassionate

- Full fluency in English with impeccable written and verbal communication skills
- Full fluency and a great understanding of the subject you wish to tutor
- The hunger and drive to learn more on how to be a better teacher. You understand that all students are different, and that your proactiveness is what keeps performing at your best
- Software technical knowledge of Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft OneNote, Gmail and Google Drive.
Bonus points if you have:
- Any experience as an educator or passion for communicating knowledge
- Used SMIYL resources for your A Levels
